Q: What is a DNA Test?
A: A DNA test uses deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) — usually taken from a cheek swab — to determine a child’s biological father, grandparent; or in other cases sibling tests.
Q: What to expect before a DNA test?
A: Most DNA paternity tests use a cheek swab to collect buccal cells, DNA sample from the potential father, grandparent; or in other cases a sibling? They’ll use a cotton swab to collect cheek (buccal) cells from the inside of your mouth. At least two hours before the cheek swab, it’s a good idea to avoid:
These will affect the quality of your cheek swab.
Q: What type of results do we receive and what do the results mean?
A: DNA paternity test results usually list a “probability of paternity” as two values: 0% or 99.9%.
A result of 0% means there isn’t a genetic match between the potential non-birthing parent and the fetus or child — they aren’t the father.
A result of 99.9% means that the potential non-birthing parent is very likely to be a genetic parent of the fetus or child.
Q: When will I receive the results of the DNA test?
A: The results will be sent via email, to the email address on your original application, within 4-5 business days. If you are interested in a Rush result process, there is a $75 fee. The Rush Result Process is a 1-2 day process.
